Before white settlers entered the region, it was popular among Indians traveling to nearby Pipestone quarries. The first settlers at Lake Herman were Herman Luce and his son, William. They settled the timberland on the east side of the lake and assumed squatters' rights on June 17, 1870.The log cabin in the park was built for Herman Luce in the summer of 1871. The cabin is made of sturdy oak logs hand hewn to fit snugly and chinked to keep out the cold. Luce's cabin briefly served as a U. S. Land Office, with Herman Luce in charge. Traditionally, this area was home for several American Indian tribes. Early explorers crossed this area on their way between Big Stone Lake and the Rocky Mountains. The first European settlers named the area because no trees were visible on the vast prairie until they reached the crest of the hills overlooking the valley. In 1927, the Department of Game and Fish used a new technique called an earthen dam to make Lake Hiddenwood, one of the first artificial lakes in South Dakota. Unfortunately in 2018 a flood event caused the dam to collapse and drained most of the lake. The park was closed for 4 years and reopened in 2022 when a new access road was built into the park. The land was leased to the State of South Dakota in 1946 and since then the park has been host to residents and vacationers alike. Visitors enjoy the abundant wildlife and beautiful scenery, along with modern conveniences like showers, flush toilets, dump station and picnic shelter.\r\n\r\nDeer, wild turkeys, beaver and many small animals abound in the park as well as a variety of trees and plant life. Birdwatchers will enjoy the opportunities to see many species of birds including cardinals, orioles, grosbeak, warblers, red-winged blackbirds, blue jays, pheasants and wild turkeys.\r\n\r\nAll types of hunting is allowed within the park from October 1 until April 30th during designated hunting seasons.
